Construction Begins On New Pedestrian Crossing at Beech St. and Hwy 160 In Mancos

Construction will start Monday, April 17 for a new at-grade pedestrian crossing in Mancos on US Highway 160 at the intersection of Beech St. The crossing includes a low height concrete barrier in the center median of the highway as a pedestrian refuge. The north right-in/right-out island will be reconstructed, and a new south island will be constructed. New signing, crosswalk striping, and solar-powered Rapid Flash Beacons, installed by Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will complete the project. This project greatly enhances pedestrian safety along the corridor by providing a second crosswalk just west of the current traffic light at US Highway 160 and Hwy 184.

Construction is anticipated to last six weeks. The project is not expected to impact highway US 160 traffic significantly. However, in-town traffic will see the south side of Beech St. and Frontage Rd. closed for approximately one week. The north side of Beech St. will likely be closed for 2-3 weeks. Motorists are cautioned they will need to find an alternative access to US 160 during these construction periods. Crews are scheduled to work Mondays through Fridays from between 7:30 am and 6:30 pm.

The construction contract was awarded to D & L Construction of Cortez. The total project cost is $304,103. Federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds administered by CDOT will pay $74,767 towards the project, Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DoLA) is contributing $118,561, and the Town of Mancos will pay approximately $110,775 for the project. Russell Planning & Engineering, a Durango-based engineering firm, designed the project and is performing the construction management.

The media and the public are invited to attend a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for April 17 at 3:00 pm, which will be held on the northeast corner of the intersection of Beech St. and US Highway 160. For additional information, please call 970-533-7725.
