Don’t Flush That! Flyer

The Town of Mancos Public Works Department is divided into two main areas. They are the streets/utility distribution (water & sewer) and the water/wastewater plants operation.

Snow removal is done by the Public Works Streets Crew when accumulations reach approximately four inches. Removal starts around 3:30 in the morning to accommodate early risers. CDOT crews plow Grand Avenue and Main Street, and Town crews plow all secondary streets. Alleys are cleared only after all primary streets are cleared first.

In the event of a water and/or sewer emergency after hours, please contact Cortez Dispatch at (970) 565-8441.

Streets (General)

Except for Main Street, and Grand Avenue, most streets in town are gravel. The Town coats the streets with mag chloride to keep the dust down. Some storm drainage has been accomplished, but the Town has been working to upgrade its system.

The Town’s drinking water comes from the West Mancos River. Water is diverted from the river either through the Town’s diversion structure on the river, or through a supply stored at Jackson Gulch Reservoir. Current treatment capacity is one million gallons per day, and plant operation requires a Class B license. For more information about the Town’s water situation, including information about how the Town manages drought situations, please click on Water Management Plan. Wastewater is treated in an aerated lagoon system, then discharged back into the Mancos River downstream from the Town. Plant operation requires a Class D license. At this time the Town has been working to improve its water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This effort stems from a need to replace 50-year old clay pipes, as well as provide adequate infrastructure support for a growing population and business community.
