ADMINISTRATOR’S MONTHLY UPDATE

for the TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES and the MANCOS COMMUNITY

SEPTEMBER 2015

This Monthly Update is a supplemental report for inclusion in the Town Board of Trustees agenda packet, distributing to the community, and for posting on the Town website. It is for informational purposes. Items herein may or may not warrant Board of Trustees discussion, and do not require action unless noted on the meeting agenda.

CONCEPTS FOR HWY 160 TO BE PRESENTED

Representatives from CDOT Region 5 and Russell Engineering will present conceptual ideas for improvements to the Hwy 160 through Mancos at the Board meeting on September 9. This stretch of highway sees thousands of visitors and commuters and is an important piece of the Mancos community. Public input has been gathered and so far design ideas include adding separate sidewalks or walking paths, opening access to and from the highway onto town collector streets, creating alternatives to the wire “access control fence” and placing gateway signage and landscaped medians at each entrance of town. Goals of the project include: increasing pedestrian, bike and vehicular safety, opening access to the highway to assist in vehicle circulation and business development, and creating a sense of place and arrival. The public is invited to hear these concepts and to provide feedback to town hall.

TREE PLANTING

The Town of Mancos Tree Board has been busy planting trees in the public right of ways around town. Several types of deciduous trees were purchased through a grant from the Colorado Tree Coalition and volunteers are planting them in areas between sidewalks and the street. Trees can provide valuable shade, increase property values, and provide habitats for wildlife. Property owners agree to water the trees as they get established.

UPCOMING EVENTS

There are some exciting events happening in September and October. First, the Mancos Creative District is partnering again with the Mancos Public Library and the Mt. Lookout Grange to hold the Second Annual Fall Harvest Festival on Sept. 13, beginning at 5:00 pm (set up starts at 4:30 pm). This fun community event is a huge potluck in the middle of Grand Ave. Attendees are encouraged to bring a potluck dish to share, a table for your party, and a homemade pie to enter the pie baking contest. Secondly, the town will hold its fall town-wide cleanup on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th. Bring your unwanted items to the public works shop at 300 S. Monte St. for free disposal from 8 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Hazardous waste and e-waste will not be accepted. Yard waste disposal is available at the yard waste drop off site at Rd. 39 north on Saturday September 19 and Saturday October 17 from 8 am to noon.

WATER METER PROJECT

Thanks to a Department of Local Affairs grant, the town was able to complete installation of over 500 new water meters town-wide and rebuild104 old water meter pits. Using new software, streets staff can read water meters in a fraction of the time it used to take to read the meters individually. Not only are the new meters lead-free and modern, they are more accurate.
