ADMINISTRATOR’S MONTHLY UPDATE

for the TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES and the MANCOS COMMUNITY

May 2016

This Monthly Update is a supplemental report for inclusion in the Town Board of Trustees agenda packet, distributing to the community, and for posting on the Town website. It is for informational purposes. Items herein may or may not warrant Board of Trustees discussion, and do not require action unless noted on the meeting agenda.

 MONTHLY YARD WASTE DROP OFFS

Beginning on Saturday, May 21st, the town will provide a free monthly yard-waste drop off service at the old “town dump” on Rd. 39 north. Residents can bring their tree limbs, grass clippings, weeds, and other plant material to the site between 8:00 a.m. and noon every third Saturday of the month from May to October. Low quality mulch is available for free at the site.

TOWN-WIDE CLEANUP JUNE 3rd AND 4th

Once again the town will offer free disposal of unwanted household items through a town-wide cleanup. All residents are welcome to participate in this event, which will be held on Friday and Saturday June 3rd and June 4th from 8 am to 5 pm both days. Citizens must haul their own items to the Public Works Shop at 300 S. Monte St. Scrap metal will be accepted, as well as tires of various sizes (for a small disposal fee). No hazardous waste or e-waste will be accepted.

COTTONWOOD PARK ENHANCEMENT GRANT AWARDED

The town has applied for and received a $41,866 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado to make some basic improvements to Cottonwood Park. The town’s match is an additional $17,030 (both cash and in-kind) for a total project budget of $59,896. The scope of the project is to increase accessibility and enhance the park while keeping it natural. Plans include a new surface on the existing trail around the perimeter of the park, adding a trail segment across the center of the park for an additional loop option, and building a trail spur from the parking lot to the picnic area. In addition to trail improvements, amenities such benches, signage, and trash containers and dog waste bag dispensers will be added.

MANCOS CREATIVE DISTRICT HOSTS SPACE TO CREATE VISITORS

On Wednesday, May 11th the Steering Committee of the Mancos Creative District will welcome visitors to Mancos from Colorado Creative Industries (through the state Office of Economic Deelopment and International Trade), the Department of Local Affairs, ArtSpace, and foundations such as El Pomar and the Boettcher Foundation. Mancos is one of two communities in the southwest region of Colorado that is being considered for an investment opportunity to promote live/work housing for creatives and artisans. Guests will be able to see the best of downtown Mancos, including a tour of potential properties for renovation, an authentic chuck wagon lunch, and a presentation from local community partners.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SERVE ON BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS

One of the best ways to get to know your community is to volunteer. There are several spots open on town boards and committees. The Planning and Zoning Commission, Mancos Tree Board, Design Review Board, and Mancos Creative District, Mancos Days Committee, and the town Historic Preservation Board are all seeking interested individuals to serve. For more information, contact Town Hall and pick up an application today.
