ADMINISTRATOR’S MONTHLY UPDATE
for the TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES and the MANCOS COMMUNITY
This Monthly Update is a supplemental report for inclusion in the Town Board of Trustees agenda packet, distributing to the community, and for posting on the Town website. It is for informational purposes. Items herein may or may not warrant Board of Trustees discussion, and do not require action unless noted on the meeting agenda.
PATH TO MESA VERDE TRAIL UPDATE
Initial plans are in the works to build a multi-purpose trail that would link the Town of Mancos with the City of Cortez, stopping at Mesa Verde National Park and other locations along the way such as the County Fairgrounds and Phil’s World. A Transportation Assistance Planning grant was received through CDOT to assist the consortium with the planning phase of the project. A multijurisdictional team is dedicated to seeing the 17 mile trail completed and partners include Montezuma County, the City of Cortez, the Town of Mancos, CDOT, Mesa Verde National Park, BLM, and several trail user groups. Support for the trail has been demonstrated throughout the Montezuma County community. This trail project was recently named one of Governor Hickenlooper’s “16 in 2016” trail projects. A Request for Qualifications for engineering and planning firms is being advertised now with proposals due back on June 3. Interviews will be conducted in mid-June and a firm will be selected by early July to conduct the planning phase of the project which may take up to two years. This phase entails determining trail surfaces and alignments, developing budget estimates for the project, and completing engineering and design.
FRIENDLY PROPERTY MAINTENANCE REMINDERS
With all of the rain received this spring, the grasses (and the weeds!) are growing fast. As a friendly reminder, the town asks residents to keep lawns and adjacent areas trimmed. This summer, public works crews will be trimming the alleys throughout town to allow for trucks and equipment to pass through safely. Any overhanging branches will be cut by the crews. Alleys should be kept clear of debris at all times and items should not be stored in these areas. Town staff thanks the Mancos community for complying with these standards.
MANCOS CELEBRATES 20 YEARS AS TREE CITY USA COMMUNITY
The Town of Mancos received designation again this year as a “Tree City USA community.” 2016 marks the 20th year of recognition. The Mancos Tree Board, which works hard to keep the town’s trees in excellent shape, is to be congratulated for their continued efforts. Tree City USA is a program through the Arbor Day Foundation. The program focuses on educating the public about the importance of trees in the community, including the benefits they provide.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SERVE ON BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS
One of the best ways to get to know your community is to volunteer. There are several spots open on town boards and committees. The Planning and Zoning Commission, Mancos Tree Board, Design Review Board, and Mancos Creative District, Mancos Days Committee, and the town Historic Preservation Board are all seeking interested individuals to serve.
