This Monthly Update is a supplemental report for inclusion in the Town Board of Trustees agenda packet, distributing to the community, and for posting on the Town website. It is for informational purposes. Items herein may or may not warrant Board of Trustees discussion, and do not require action unless noted on the meeting agenda.
57th ANNUAL MANCOS DAYS CELEBRATION
The weekend of July 29th through the 31st marks the 57th Annual Mancos Colorado Days celebration. Games for adults and kids, parades, a softball tournament, vendors, and entertainment will be offered all weekend in Boyle Park in downtown Mancos. Costumes are encouraged to match the theme “Desperados and Fancy Ladies.” In addition, a classic car show, presentation of the Mancos Days Queen, fire department hose water fights, and volleyball and horseshoe tournaments are scheduled. A group of committed volunteers has been working on planning the event since January and excited about this year’s celebration. Several local businesses and organizations have sponsored the event. RAW WATER/WATER LINE PROJECT DESIGN RFP
The town is seeking proposals from qualified engineering and design firms to assist in completing drawings for construction of a new Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV), improvements to the raw water intake at the Mancos River, and new water lines on the south side of town. This $538,858 project is funded by grants from the Southwest Water Conservation Board, the Southwest Basin Roundtable, the Department of Local Affairs, and town matching funds. A mandatory walk through will be held on July 7th and written proposals are due by July 29th. OPEN POSITIONS FOR DEPUTY MARSHAL
The Town of Mancos is seeking to fill two Deputy Marshal positions in the Mancos Marshal’s Office. One position is newly funded in the 2016 budget and will expand the office from three individuals (including the Marshal) to four. The other open position is due to a vacancy of Deputy Yvonne McClellan, who accepted a detective position with Montezuma County Sherriff’s Office. Applicants must have a minimum of one year of law enforcement experience, a High School Diploma or GED, and must be Colorado POST Certified. COTTONWORK PARK IMPROVEMENTS BEGIN THIS MONTH
A grant received by Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and contributions from the Mancos Trails Group will help fund improvements to Cottonwood Park. Phase I of the $59,896 project will be completed this year and work begins the week of July 11. Crews from the Southwest Conservation Corps will break new trail segments in the picnic area and the open area, replace the trail surface on the existing perimeter trail with natural crusher fines and will help repair the split rail fences at the entrances. New bear-safe trash containers and picnic tables have been ordered to supplement existing park furniture. Phase II, which will be completed in 2017, includes improved signage, renovated parking area and the creation of better river access points.
CONNECT 4 BROADBAND INITIATIVE MOVING QUICKLY
A countywide partnership between the Towns of Dolores and Mancos, the City of Cortez, and Montezuma County is forming to help bring faster and more reliable internet services to our rural areas. Services are spotty, slow and more expensive than most other areas in the state. Voters will be asked to approve a one-cent sales tax in November that will fund the construction of “middle and last mile” broadband infrastructure. This will include a mixture of fiber in the ground and aerial equipment. The goal of the project is to bring the cost of the infrastructure down so that the ISPs (internet service providers) will be able to offer faster and cheaper internet services. A latest estimate for build out of the system to every home in Montezuma County is about $40 million. An authority will be formed to manage the funds and to see to the project coordination. The Montezuma County Economic Development Alliance (MCEDA) is a strong proponent of the initiative, as availability of this utility will be an important economic development tool.
