ADMINISTRATOR’S MONTHLY UPDATE
for the TOWN BOARD OF TRUSTEES and the MANCOS COMMUNITY
January 2017
This Monthly Update is a supplemental report for inclusion in the Town Board of Trustees agenda packet, distributing to the community, and for posting on the Town website. It is for informational purposes. Items herein may or may not warrant Board of Trustees discussion, and do not require action unless noted on the meeting agenda.
WATER RATES TO INCREASE IN JANUARY
This month, monthly water rates will increase by $2.50 for all customers. Base gallons will remain the same at 7,000 gallons. This rate increase will help fund water infrastructure improvement projects such as a new refurbishing the town’s old water storage tank, water line replacements, and improvements to the town’s raw water intake system. Recommendations to increase the rates and lower the base gallons allotted per household came from a consulting firm, which studied the town’s rates and compared them to the town’s capital needs. Not only were the town’s rates lower than the average for towns of similar size, but it was not sufficient to cover operating and capital needs for the water system. In 2017, staff will be evaluating the rate structure and will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
2017 WORK PLANS
Department heads have compiled their work plans for this year. The work plan is a tool to communicate with elected officials and the public on the projects and priorities that the town will be engaged in throughout the year. Quarterly updates on the projects will be submitted to the Board of Trustees. In addition to the regular daily duties of departments, staff will be managing key projects such as installation of an at-grade pedestrian crossing at Beech St. and Hwy 160, design and engineering for the Main Street Bridge replacement, and many other initiatives.

It is critical that residents get up to date information on storm warnings, emergencies, and other updates from local law enforcement agencies. A free service called “Nixle” provides texts and email alerts to customers who sign up. There is no fee. The town of Mancos Marshal’s Office, as well as Montezuma County and other local agencies have accounts so that they can alert the public to weather warnings, missing persons reports, and other emergencies. CRIME PATTERNS IN MANCOS
Recently, Mancos’ Marshal Spruell presented to the Board of Trustees on crime patterns in Mancos. Aside from speeding and other traffic violations, the majority of crimes are related to theft. These are considered “crimes of opportunity” and criminals typically strike unlocked cars and homes. The Marshal’s Office would like to remind the public to keep valuables out of sight or out of vehicles entirely, and to keep cars locked. Bikes, tools and other items have also been stolen from porches and yards. Put these items away and help deter crime.
